Penistone Show
Saturday 11th September 2010
Penistone has a sheep all of its own. Officially the Whitefaced Woodland it was once the main breed traded at Penistone Market and became Penistone Sheep. A big hardy sheep with magnificent curling horns, it has an unusually long and muscular tail, which used to be sheared separatly for carpet wool.
The breed began to lose popularity in the 1800's when grazing rights were lost in the enclosure of common land. Numbers fell still more in the First World War, when valuable breeding stock was sold for meat, but a few stalwart breeders held on. Although still quite rare, it is considered to have commercial possibilities since the breed is hardy, the meat delicious and knitters like the lucious wool
As well as the Whitefaced Woodland (Penistone Sheep) there are other popular breeds including Suffolk Rylands and,Texal.
