The 2009 Penistone Show was an incredible success. After a couple of years when the weather was less than perfect the 137th Show treated us to a warm, cloudless day. Add to that a great line-up of attractions, from superb stock to record entries in Poultry, Horticulture, Home and Handicraft, and huge crowds were assured.
It was wonderful to see so many people stretching out on the grass enjoying Punch and Judy, brass bands, jazz or pop music while tucking into the local food that is always so much of a pleasure at the Show. The Racing Camels and the Sheep Show were both great draws, and as always the Heavy Horse classes attracted much interest. The Craft and Food tents were deservedly popular, and judging by the bags it seems that half the crowd were stocking up on plants while the other half started their Christmas shopping.
The Red Arrows arrived just before six, a little late for most show visitors but worthwhile nonetheless. They roared in close formation across a sky still perfectly blue, a fitting finish to a wonderful day.

As of June, show preparations are well under way. All the volunteers on the Show Committee are working hard to set the stage for a wonderful September day. This year we have kept our prices low, in recognition of the financial difficulties everyone is suffering, and we would like everyone to think about buying their tickets early to make extra savings. Tickets are available locally in Penistone at the following venues:
The Post Office, Penistone
Robinson’s Newsagents, Penistone
Holmfirth Information Centre
Kaye’s Shop, Millhouse Green
Or ring our ticket hotline on 07752 635304 – you can even pre-order a discounted programme for collection on the day.
SHOW
DAY
On Show Day itself, we can promise you improved access and in most areas new, modern marquees. We are giving a lot of thought to parking and exhibitors will be issued with special car stickers to take them to the right areas with the least possible trouble. Once there though, the fun starts – camel racing, hawks, a craft tent bursting at the seams, a giant trading village and our usual fabulous stock lines, horticulture and so much more.
SCHEDULES
And – take note all exhibitors – Show Schedules are ready! Available free from the above venues, or ask for one through the website or by telephone. One omission this year is the Young Handler classes in Poultry. Anyone interested in entering these should call the Section Secretary, Hayley Nicholson on 07932 945245 and she will send you the details.
THE
DEVELOPMENT
We have also just been given an update on what is happening to the long awaited Penistone development, which will mean some loss of land to the new Tesco supermarket. The good news is that this year’s Show will be unaffected, with work not starting until October, when the new fire station will be ready and the old one can be demolished. After that, we will be working closely with all concerned to make sure that Penistone Show 2010 and ever after will be assured. Great efforts have been made to ensure that we have access to extra land, and we intend to talk to Tesco to iron out any problems early on. The Show Committee is determined to keep the Show at the heart of Penistone and the latest news gives us no cause for concern. The Show will go on.
PEOPLE
Our President, Mr. J.G. Durrans, will be retiring after this year’s Show, to be replaced by well respected local builder, Mr. Geoffrey Roberts. The Committee would like to thank Mr. Durrans for his wonderful support over the years, and to welcome Mr. Roberts. You will be able to read a profile of both gentlemen in this year’s Show Programme and Catalogue, available for £1.50 on the day or £1 if pre-ordered. Mr. Durrans’ final address is on page 7 of this year’s Schedule.
This year has also seen the sad death of Mr. F. Roe, a long term member of our Committee since his early involvement through Young Farmers many years ago. Fred was tireless in his support and he will be much missed. The Committee would like to send its condolences to Fred’s family, and to thank his wife Jenny for her continued involvement with the Show.

JUDGE
The judge for this year’s goat entries will be
